“I have a Toshiba USB flash drive where I keep my resume and other profiles. Not long ago, I deleted some of the files that I thought was out of date. But yesterday I just found out I accidentally deleted a file that is useful and important. I checked my Recycle Bin but it is not there. I didn’t empty my Recycle Bin for ages. Why is it not there? I am thinking if there is a way to restore that files back. Please help!”
When you right click on a file in the USB flash drive, you will probably be prompted with this message:”Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file?” If you click Yes, then the file will be deleted permanently. It is the same effect as pressing Shift + Delete combination keys on your keyboard. This means that no matter how you choose to delete the file on your USB flash drive, the file will be deleted permanently, instead of going into recycle bin, unlike those deleted files on your local hard drives.
How does this happen? It’s simply because of that when a USB flash drive is connected to the computer, it will be recognized as a removable disk. Storage devices that are considered as “removable” – such as CDs or USB flash drives – do not have this recycle bin folder. Windows Desktop Recycle Bin is not an actual folder that can hold data. It is a virtual folder that only collects the information such as names, original locations and deleted date about the deleted files and presents to us in a user-friendly manner so that we can view, restore or permanently delete these files. In Windows 7/8/10 with NTFS file system, a hidden $Recycle.Bin folder is created under each drive to store deleted files. And removable storage devices don’t have that feature. That is why we can’t see the files deleted from USB flash drives in recycle bin.
Different operating systems also treat the concept of “removable” slightly differently. For example, some external hard drives are “removable” in nature but are considered as “hard drives” and have their own recycle bins created by the system. In short, if the system sees the storage device as “removable storage medium”, it will not assign a recycle folder to it and files deleted from this storage medium will be directly deleted and won’t be displayed in desktop Recycle Bin.
How to Recover Files Deleted from USB Flash Drives
Since we cannot restore files from Recycle Bin, what do we do? Permanently deleted files on USB flash drives, SD cards, microSD cards… can be retrieved using professional recovery software that can perform data recovery on flash memories.
