Solid-state drives have many advantages over traditional hard disk drives. SSDs have higher read and write speed; they don’t suffer from the mechanical problems which plague HDDs such as platter damage. They even consume less power than mechanical hard disk drives, because they don’t require disks and the motor that sets them spinning. But that doesn’t mean SSDs are immune to data loss. The SSD consists of a control unit and a flash memory unit, which is also widely used on various memory cards and USB flash drives.
The process of deletion on an SSD is different from the process of deleting files on a traditional hard drive. When the file is deleted on a regular hard disk drive, it is only an index that got deleted. The real data still remain where they are, until they are overwritten by the new files. However, it is not the case with SSDs, where the content will be deleted immediately because of the TRIM command. When you write new data to a mechanical hard disk, Windows will allow the disks to first erase previous data. When you perform the delete operation, Windows will mark the corresponding space as accessible, but will not delete the contents of the actual file.
However, when Windows recognizes the SSD and confirms that TRIM is supported, it will immediately delete the file instead of creating a special tag.
